Trouble learning Japanese help!?

I am learning Japanese at school (I'm in year nine) and I have trouble speaking and listening to it. I don't know what to suggest but if he's listening to Japanese songs, just find the romanji words of the lyrics and make him read it while the band/singer sings and follow as the song goes.
