Why do some people claim that all military personnel are "heroes?"?

I'm not saying there are no heroes in the military. But all this hero-worship for no other reason than for serving in the military bothers me. The designation loses all meaning when applied to everyone. The guy in Virginia, flying a predator drone on his video game screen, is not a hero.
